UpSkill Bites offer an opportunity for you to develop your soft skills one bite at a time. In this UpSkill Bite: How self-confidence is different from self-esteem Self-esteem and confidence are two sides of the same coin. They are not the same thing, although they support each other. So you have you can have low self-esteem and high self-confidence and vice versa. Self-esteem means you are sure of yourself, sure of who you are. Self-confidence means you are sure of your results, you are sure of what you can do. Both self-esteem and self-confidence are situational – different situations or events impact our self-esteem and self-confidence differently. The key is to notice the situations that impact your self-esteem or confidence. The word esteem means to like, to admire, to value, to hold in high esteem, in high regard, to size up. So self-esteem is therefore an assessment of your personal worth and self-respect. Your worth for its own sake, not linked to any achievement. Self-esteem is therefore inward facing. Self-esteem is the deep-seated belief that you are worthy, that you deserve what you desire, like accomplishments are your birthright, that failure is an opportunity to try again, and you belong everywhere you show up, and no one else can show up like you. You bring something unique and you don’t have to show it unless you want to, because you know it. Y our self-esteem impacts how you think about decisions, how you act, how you feel, how you relate to others. When you approve of yourself, this is positive self-esteem. When you think you deserve what you desire – like happiness, health, wealth, you have positive self-esteem. High self-esteem is evidenced by resilience. Resilience is the bounce-back ability, it encompasses acceptance, forgiveness, self-love, mental toughness and the ability to get up and keep doing it. Where there is no resilience, there is low or no self-esteem. High resilience is the evidence of self-esteem. That’s your UpSkill Bite. for today.
