The ground shifted! It shifted for you, for me, for all of us.
People became more aware of some of the social issues, mental health, social justice, wellbeing, care community, a sense of belonging, more awareness of the importance of those at work. More awakenness about the inequities around us. Different attitudes, emerged about all of the things that became more clear. People began to hold us more accountable, particularly us as leaders, much more accountable. For how we do our work and certainly hold us accountable for taking action. Those are just some of the things that shifted.
Â
In this episode Michel highlights that most of these shifts took place below the surface. She encourages us as leaders to always remember and pay attention to context to reduce risks.Â
It’s always important to understand context. It is even more essential coming out of this pandemic. Nothing is the way you left it. Not the environments you used to frequent, not the people you are speaking with. They’re not the same, even though they may appear the same above the surface, much of what’s shifted has shifted below the surface.Â
Check your mindset to be better prepared for what’s ahead.
Take five and set aside time to think about what can you do differently? How will you do it differently and what will be the benefit of doing it differently? Take time to identify areas where you have a fixed mindset and then intentionally shift it. These are the riskiest areas for leaders if we don’t identify them before others do. Consider the system of mindsets that you’re going to cultivate to help you unpack your best post pandemic self.

Welcome to UpSkill Talks brought to you by McGraw Hill. I’m your host, Michel Shah lead UpSkiller at UpSkill Community. We will present you with real strategies for you to leverage your soft skills and produce transformative results. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Let us begin. During the pandemic, the ground shifted. It shifted for you. It shifted for me, it shifted for all of us. What exactly shift. So many things shifted. We don’t have enough time to talk about it, but let’s look at five things that shifted awareness, awakenness attitudes, accountability, and action. We’ve always been held accountable. There’s always been awareness after the pandemic, during the pandemic, everything gotten heightened and that’s the difference. So what’s going to be important for us going forward in order for us to survive and thrive in a post pandemic world. One thing that’s going to be critical is that you understand context, that you never take context for granted, that you remind you that what you see is not all there is to see that actually, what you. Is a much less than there is. And you really recall the story of the Titanic, how it hits the iceberg because so little was above ground and so much was below ground and caused one of the greatest sea tragedies of all time. And so we wanna make sure as leaders. We don’t hit icebergs in our, post pandemic world. So I want you to be aware that we see certain things about the surface, but most of what concerns human beings lies below the surface, their preferences, their values, their customs, their belief systems, their traditions lived experiences. Desires intention, the impact you’re having on them. All of these things are below the surface. I want you to always remember and pay attention to how this may support you going forward. Context provides opportunities that has a lot of risks. It’s always important to understand context in everything we do. That is the number one thing to be aware of coming out of this pandemic. The ground has shifted the way you left things, the environments you used to frequent. They’re not the same, even though they may appear the same above the surface, much of what’s shifted has shifted below the surface. I want you to be aware of that context as we go out, as we communicate with others, as we partner with others, as we set goals through this process, and I wanna give you another tip. you will need to think rethink and unthink, you can’t believe everything. You think you cannot trust your mind to continue in the path that it has operated on and in before, because that will not work post pandemic. So it’s going to be very important for you to stop and do what Peter Drucker talks about. Is to think about your thinking, whatever you think, think the opposite and ask yourself, what is the value of the opposite before you act on your thinking? And so I wanna encourage you to check your mindset. Check your mindset and your mindset. I’m going to use a metaphor of your, your operating system on your devices to help us understand the mindset. We don’t really interface with our operating system. We interface with applications. But without the operating system, none of those applications run. Every single thing that we do with our devices is based on the operating system. But we rarely think about it. Some of you may have systems in place where you automatically update your operating system. Some of you don’t even remember what it is, and then you go to run an application and you get an error message that says, Hey, can’t run this application. That’s how our mindset works. A lot has changed. We need a more powerful mindset system of mindsets to operate post pandemic. If you have not been updating, revisiting upskilling your mindset, it may not be able to provide you what you need to add on and to UpSkill. For this post pandemic era. It’s very important that the very first thing you do is to check your mindset.
I want to let you know that if you think I’m I don’t have to change anything. I want to encourage you to, to pay attention to the fact that your mindset is not a secret. Even if you don’t know it, everyone around you knows what your mindset is. Your mindset is like you’re carrying a bag of rice and there’s a hole in it. And you’re walking and rice grain is dripping all over the place and you don’t know it, but everyone else around you knows what’s in your bag. Your mindset leaves an imprint on anything you touch and everything you touch, it shows up in how you think it shows up in what you say. It shows up in your decision, making, it shows up in your actions or your inactions. It shows up in who you are. So it’s really important because it touches everything you do that you take time to make sure it is reflecting the direction that you want to. Take five and set aside time to think about what can you do differently? How will you do it differently and what will be the benefit of doing it differently? Take time to identify areas where you have a fixed mindset and then intentionally shift it. And I want you to think about the system of mindsets that you’re going to cultivate to help you unpack your best post pandemic self.
