I want to share three keys about your core values today. Number 1: core values cannot be simply stated they must be demonstrated number 2: core values impact how we think, how we make decisions, and how we behave. All our actions as a result the evidence of our core values is noticeable by others. So if you are asking others for feedback on the values that are most important to you and they have not noticed it, it’s an opportunity for us to be really thinking about what aspects of our thinking, our decision making and our actions should we be tightening up, should we be modifying in order to be closer aligned with what we say are our important values. that has to be an ongoing process because as we continue to do more, we have opportunities to tighten this or we may shift off track. Ongoing feedback is going to be essential to making sure that we are continually demonstrating what we call our core values. Number 3 the “C” in core values is for your commitment. Core values are not easy to live by. If they were easy to live by, this is not the kind of society we would live in. Core values are hard to live by. They’re painful, uncomfortable. The issue, the thing about core values when we are committed to them, is that whether or not there is discomfort, there is pain, there is pleasure, we will live by these values. We have committed that we will not waver from these values. So when you are in a sunshine day you’ll demonstrate your values – your core values, when you’re in the middle of a storm, you will demonstrate your core values. That’s how you know this is a core value. If you can demonstrate this value in the midst of trauma, loss, grief, pain, discomfort, and likewise, demonstrate it with the height of success or the depth of failure, that’s when you know this is a core value.
