In this episode, Michel invites us to take a moment to reflect on our goals as we come to the middle of the year.
She suggests we go back and think about the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year and consider three questions:
How am I doing on the goals that I’ve set myself at the beginning of the year, now that I’m at the midway point.
Do they provide a transformation? Do they make my life better? Do they move me forward? Do they make me feel better? Do they impact the lives of others? Do they bring about change in my community, family, world?
Consider if you are setting goals that don’t require you to stretch? Can you update your goals to make them stretch you a little bit more?
Then she invites us to take a moment to reflect on our process so far this year.
What’s working well for you?
What you need to do to make it better?
What is getting in the way?
She shares her own personal reflection to help us see how we may be unconsciously telling ourselves stories that affect goal attainment.
So whatever you’re doing right now, Michel invites us to pause. We’re only at the mid year. If we start to pick up the pace, if we start to make changes right now, and if we refocus, we can really UpSkill our goal setting process, our goals, our achievements to achieve more by year end.

Michel Shah:
Hello, and welcome to this episode of UpSkill Talks. I am Michel Shah and in this episode, Let us take a moment to reflect on our goals as we’ve come to the middle of the year. I don’t know about you, but for me, this just seems so fast. Can you believe we’re in the middle of the year? I cannot believe it. But that’s how fast time flies. And so let us pause. And to go back and think about the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. In January or at the beginning of the year, I actually recorded 10 episodes. Related to goals. And. The most popular episode of UpSkill Talks. Is episode 14. Setting the SMARTEST goals. And that tells me that goals are very, very important to you. And the fact that that I’ve recorded 10 episodes on a topic. Tells you that I know. And I believe that goals are also very important. So this is an area that we both agree on. So let’s talk. May was my birthday. And when it comes to my birthday, I take time to reflect on a new year because my birthday is a new year for me, in addition to January being a new year. And so I pause, always to think about. How have I done year over year? Where am I this year, relative to where I was last year. That’s always a question that I asked myself on my birthday. And then immediately after may is done I’m at mid-year. And so it also. Helps me to pause and think about. How am I doing on the goals that I’ve set myself at the beginning of the year, now that I’m at the midway point. And so goals are important to you. Goals are important to me and it makes sense. Anthony Robbins says that with goals, we can create our future in advance and certainly we want to be the architects of our future. And so this makes sense that goals are so important to us. In one of the episodes, someone shared a comment with me and said, I don’t actually set goals. I just developed new habits. And I had an opportunity to communicate and said, there are many types of goals and habits fit under the category of process goals. We’re most accustomed to setting performance goals, which tells us how we perform, but these goals, which are the habits, the process. Those are also goals that we set for ourselves. So goal really. Anything that moves us from where we are currently to another point. That we desire to be at really, we can consider that a goal. And so now that we’re at the mid point this year, How do you feel. Let’s take a moment to reflect on our progress so far this year. For starters. We are grateful. We are here at the middle of the year with the privilege to reflect. We are here. We’re fortunate and we’re grateful. So that’s an accomplishment in itself. Just being here. It’s a big deal. All right, so that’s one. So now let’s take a moment and review our goals. Take a look at the goals that you’d set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Were these goals worthy? Where they ambitious. Did they align with your purpose? Do these goals matter for what you want to do, the impact you want to have, who you want to become, how you want to feel. And most importantly, do they provide a transformation? Do they make your life better? Do they move you forward? Do they make you feel better? Do they impact the lives of others? Do they bring about change in your community, in your family, in our world? What kinds of goals are you set in? Are you setting the goals that you don’t have to even stretch your hands out fully to touch it it’s already within your reach? Or are you challenging yourself to stretch a little bit more? Just outside your reach. To those ambitious goals that move you forward. The goals that you can touch without even stretching, perhaps may not move you forward. So we need to be revisiting, reviewing the gold, look at the goals and be honest with yourself. Do these goals actually move me forward. So that’s one. That’s the review. Now let’s check up on our results because that’s important. We need to be looking at our results. We track results. What have you accomplished so far? Remember in one of the episodes I talked to you about the importance of maintaining an accomplishment log. And this is something very simple to do. It’s something you could put in your notes on your phone. Any device is something you could put in your journal at the end of the day. Just make a note of the things you are accomplishing because sometimes when we come six months in to check in on our progress, We don’t remember what we’ve accomplished and sometimes just not remembering it doesn’t make us feel as good. And we are accomplishing things every day. Be careful and to be mindful and to be kind to yourself and write down the things that you are accomplishing. The big ones, but also the little ones. I recently got invited to an event. And I celebrated so much just to be acknowledged and recognized to be invited to that event. That was a big, big deal for me. So it doesn’t need to be. Just the fact that you achieve that $250,000 income that you set the goal for or something that big, the little things are also noteworthy and you should be tracking those. In your accomplishment log and celebrating those. So making sure that you are tracking your accomplishments. So now we’re in the mid middle of the year. What have you accomplished? Stop and check that in. Okay. What did you set out to achieve by this time? Did you. What’s short what’s going on. And then. Not just what we’ve accomplished because the goals we set perhaps that were for a year, perhaps three months, six months. So some of the goals we would not have achieved yet. But what have you actioned? Have you started action in your goals? What’s that step that you can take? Who can you pick up your phone and call? What email can you send sad right now to begin to action that goal. What do you need to do? Where do you need to go? That goal that sit in there that you. You seen the back of your head, you were afraid to write it on paper. You don’t even want anyone to know about it because you don’t want to hold yourself accountable and you don’t want anyone else to hold you accountable for it because you know, it’s a stretch goal. Do the first step. Maybe make the first step. Maybe you don’t need to achieve that entire goal of this year, maybe action in that goal and bringing it forward is adequate for this year. And next year you take the next set of steps with it, go back and review your goals and to make sure that your goals stretch you. The third I’m going to touch on is the process. Think about your process. What’s working well. The things that are working well, you want to continue those for me? Um, always very focused on professional development and consistency with that. That’s really working well for me, what’s working well for you. Think about that. And continue doing that. It would be even better if even better. If what, what do you need to start to do it? For me, I need to bring the consistency that I have in my professional development and in my work to my fitness routine, that’s what it would be even better. A for me, what is it for you? Just look at that and be honest with yourself and see how we can do this. And then what gets in the way? And that needs to stop. What is it that’s getting in the way we need to identify that. And we need to remove that because we cannot have things that get in the way from us designing. And achieving the future. We desire. And so. We struggle with a lot of things. And so what gets in the way is a really important thing where at the mid point in the year, we have six full months to go to achieve it. If we make some changes right now, we’ll be on track to achieve in it. So identify what’s working well for you continue doing that even better. If I do these additional things and what gets in the way less rooted out. One thing that I recognized in this reflection that gets in the way for me is a story that I’ve been telling myself about my fitness. I’ve been telling myself. It’s a false narrative that I am within striking distance. It’s something that I share, even with my kids, I’m within striking distance. And that means I could get in very good shape within six months. If I needed to be in great shape for something. This unconsciously. Is impacting the energy and the effort and the focus that I apply to my fitness routine, because the story it keeps, keeps me from getting to that great shape that I desire. Because I’ve accepted that being close to it, being. In striking distance is good enough. And that story is superseded in the goals that I’m setting myself over and over again. So I’m really grateful that I’ve identified the story and now. What gets in the way I know, and now I can make a decision. That this story’s not good enough. I’m going to change that narrative. I’m going to stop telling myself that because I deserve to be in the best shape of my life. And so I want you to identify the stories that are getting in the way. I want you to identify what’s working well for you. I want you to identify what you need to do to make it better. We’re only at the mid year. If we start to pick up the pace, if we start to make changes right now, and if we refocus re re-imagine wrap ourselves, we can really upscale our goal setting, process, our goals, our achievements, and then by the end of the year, We will be closer to the goals then if we just ignore them and go right through. So whatever you’re doing right now, please pause. Look at those stories that you’re unconsciously telling yourself. You dig deep dig really deep, go deep and on earth. These stories that are getting in the way, if there’s an area of your life that you realize you’re setting goals. And from time to time, you’re not moving forward. Go back and think about what is it that you’re telling yourself. That’s impeding this progress. Find that story and let’s rewrite a story. I’m going to rewrite mine and I’m going to encourage you to come along on this journey and let’s rewrite these stories and put positive narratives in that help us to achieve our goals. You deserve your goals. You deserve to be able to create and go after the future that you deserve. So look at what’s working well. Look at what needs to get better and look at what’s getting in the way. Where at the mid-year point, this is halfway through our year. The goals that we’ve set. If you didn’t set a goal, it’s not too late. If you don’t like your goals, it’s not too late. If they’re not stretchy enough, it’s not too late. If you didn’t develop the habits, it’s not too late. If you haven’t done a thing about it yet, you didn’t even start to action. It, it’s not too late treating this as the beginning of your year. If you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late. We have six months in the year. We can get a lot done. Let’s go after what we deserve. Right now. Over to you for the action. That’s it for this episode of UpSkill Talks I’m going to continue this month talking about the mid-year review of our goals and providing you strategies and tips. To help us move forward. See you next week.
